An Old Friend - A New Face for Commercial Leasing
The 11 story Fayette Bank Building, built as the First National Bank Building, dominates the skyline of downtown Uniontown and is the largest, tallest and most imposing financial/commercial/apartment building in Fayette County, and one of the largest in Western Pennsylvania outside of Pittsburgh area. It stands as a monument to the coal and coke era, and a personal memorial to the greatest Uniontown coal baron of them all, J.V. Thompson. The building was designed in the Italian Renaissance Revival style of architecture by D.H. Burnham, one of America's foremost turn-of-the-century architects. It is located on West Main Street, at the angled intersection of Main and Pittsburgh Streets. Its appearance, condition and integrity remain unchanged and unspoiled from the date of construction in 1901-2.
Thompson built the First National Bank Building while he was at the height of his power and fortune. He was president of the bank and had made hundreds of millions of dollars for the bank, himself, his associates and eager local investors, large and small, in the buying and selling of coal lands. The "skyscraper" was the realization of one of his dreams - eleven stories (he regarded 11 as his lucky number) plus an attic for storage.
The "round corner"
The design preserved a Uniontown tradition of a "round corner" - curving around the Main-Pittsburgh intersection - which had been the style at that site since 1828. (The bank had occupied an earlier round corner building after it was founded in 1864 and enlarged the building in 1883.) This resulted in the main banking room being circular, one of the few instances of such construction for financial institutions in the entire country.
The first stone was laid June 16, 1901 and the building opened on August 18, 1902, built at a cost of $1.1 million. It had 750 rooms, with banking rooms in part of the first floor and in the basement, the top four stories reserved for apartments, and the rest going to commercial and office space, lavatories, the marble halls and four elevators.
